Treatment for Female Infertility

Various fertility medicines are often used to treat women experiencing ovulation problems. We stress the importance of discussing both the pros and cons of each medicine with your physician.

Many medicines can be used to treat infertility in women, including:

  • Clomiphene Citrate (Clomid)
  • Human Menopausal gonadotropin or hMG (Repronex®, Pergonal)
  • Follicle-Stimulating Hormone or FSH (Gonal-F®, Follistim®)
  • Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (Gn-RH) Analog
  • Metformin (Glucophage)
  • Bromocriptine (Parlodel)

Doctors also utilize surgery to treat some causes of infertility. Complications as a result of problems with a woman’s ovaries, fallopian tubes, or uterus can sometimes be surgically corrected.

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a common treatment for infertility. IUI is known by most as artificial insemination. With this procedure, the woman is injected with the man’s sperm which has been specially treated before-hand. Fertility medicines are also commonly used in conjunction with this procedure to stimulate ovulation before IUI.

IUI can be used to treat:

  • mild male factor infertility
  • women with problems involving their cervical mucus
  • couples with unexplained infertility
